A gerund is a verb that acts like a noun. When -ing is added to a verb, it becomes a word that describes a person, place, or thing. In the case of sports, a gerund is used to describe the activity.

Un gerundi (-ing) és un verb que funciona com un nom. Quan s'afegeix -ing a un verb, esdevé una paraula que descriu una persona, lloc o cosa. En el cas dels esports, s'usa el gerundi per descriure l'activitat.

A gerund is used for sports or activities that people do individually. Sometimes people compete against each other to see who is the fastest or the best, but most people do these sports for fun. Gerunds are not used for team sports or ball sports (basketball, hockey, tennis, etc.), or some unique activities (gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, etc.).

Els gerundis s'usen per els esports o activitats que la gent fa de forma individual. De vegades es competeix uns contra els altres per veure qui és el més ràpid o millor, però la majoria de gent practica esports per diversió. Els gerundis no s'usen per els esports d'equip ni per els esports de pilota (bàsquet, hockey, tennis, etc) o per activitats especials (gimnàstica, arts marcials, yoga, etc.).

Like all gerunds, sports can be used as the subject and object of a sentence, as well as the object of a preposition:

Com tots els gerundis, els esports es poden usar com a subjecte i objecte d'una oració, així com després d'una preposició (objecte de preposió)

Surfing is very relaxing. El surf és molt relaxant

I love to go skiing. M'agrada anar d'esquiada. M'agrada anar a esquiar.

Teenage boys spend a lot of time skateboarding. Els nois adolescents es passen molt temps amb/fent skateboarding

He’s not very good at rollerblading. He falls down a lot. No és molt bo amb el rollerblading. Cau sovint

What’s the difference?

I like/love skiing. = I like the activity

I like/love to ski. = I like to do the activity

Melanie distingeix el significat entre I like / love + -ing i I like to + inf. Altres autors no creuen que hi hagi pas aquesta diferència i opinen que són equivalents. L'autora és canadenca. Altres gramàtics com Raymond Murphy diferencien entre I like doing i I like to do proposant que el segon nó és pas que genuinament m'agradi, però que d'haver-ho de fer, m'estimo més fer-ho en un determinat moment

Since a gerund is formed by adding –ing to the base form of the verb, all of these activities also have a verb form:

ski

surf

skate

snowboard

The verbs like, love, hate, and try can be followed by both a gerund or an infinitive (to + verb):

Els verbs like, love, hate i try poden anar seguits tant d'un gerundi (-ing) com d'un infinitiu precedit per to (to + inf)

I hate/don’t like skiing.

I hate/don’t like to ski.

Odio / No m'agrada l'esqui / esquiar

Have you tried skiing / riding a bike?

Have you tried to ski / to ride a bike?

Has intentat mai d'esquiar / anar en bicicleta?

The verbs enjoy, dislike, and go can only be followed by a gerund:

Els verbs enjoy, dislike i go només poden anar seguits d'un gerundi (-ing):

I enjoy skiing. M'encanta l'esquí o M'encanta esquiar.

I enjoy to ski.

I dislike skiing. Em desagrada l'esqui / esquiar.

I dislike to ski.

My friends and I are going hiking this weekend. Do you want to come? Els meus amics i jo anem d'excursió a la muntanya aquest cap de setmana. Vols venir?
