James Joyce

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century.

Joyce was born to a middle class family in Dublin, where he excelled as a student at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, then at University College Dublin. In his early twenties he emigrated permanently to continental Europe, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich.

Dubliners

Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.

The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence, and maturity.

The Dead is the final short story in the collection Dubliners by James Joyce. It is the longest story in the collection and widely considered to be one of the greatest short stories in the English language. L’adaptació cinematogràfica del relat Els morts de James Joyce, realitzada per John Huston al llindar de la mort, The Dead (doblada al català com a Els dublinesos i al castellà com a Dublineses), ens ofereix una interessant lectura comparada que complementa i enriqueix magistralment la narració de l’escriptor irlandès.

The Dead, dirigida per un octogenari John Huston i protagonitzada per la seva filla Anjelica Huston (GrettaConroy) i Donal McCann (Gabriel Conroy), s’estrenà pòstumament el 18 de desembre de 1987 als Estats Units d’Amèrica. A més de rebre diferents guardons durant l’any 1988 –entre els quals el Fotogramas de Plata a la millor pel·lícula estrangera-, fou nominada als Oscars al millor guió adaptat –per Tony Huston, fill també del director- i al millor vestuari.

Huston convertí la pel·lícula en el seu millor testament: dirigí la pel·lícula des d’una cadira de rodes i amb bombona d’oxigen –havia de veure les escenes en un monitor fora del plató de rodatge i parlava amb els actors mitjançant un micròfon- tan just abans de morir que no va poder ni veure-la muntada –morí d'un emfisema el 28 d'agost de 1987.

La versió és molt fidel al conte de Joyce i, tal com indica el seu guionista Tony Huston, només inclou algunes variacions respecte al text per adaptar-la al format cinematogràfic. Tant Joyce com Huston tracten de mostrar un estat de paràlisi: el primer de la seva societat i el segon de la seva mateixa vida. Huston respecta les descripcions ambientals de Joyce deixant en silenci els personatges enmig d’una música que ho inunda tot.

Els canvis més significatius de la pel·lícula respecte al llibre són la inclusió d’un nou personatge, Mr. Grace, que recita al bell mig de la vetllada un poema irlandès del segle VIII, Broken promises [‘Promeses trencades’] (de l'original en gaèlic Donal Óg, traduït a l'anglès per Lady Augusta Gregory), de temàtica amorosa desgraciada i de lluita de classes –Huston, com Joyce amb La noieta d’Aughrim, empra aquest recurs per a la projecció de la seva significança en la història-; i l’eliminació del desig sexual de Gabriel per Gretta a la part final del relat, centrant-se en el tema de la proximitat de la mort.
