You Must Bring A Hat by Simon Philip and Kate Hindley (Simon & Schuster) was today (4th October) announced as the ‘book of the year’ at the Sainsbury Children’s Book Awards 2016.

The book, published in June, is about a boy who is invited to his friend Nigel’s party. The only condition for guests is they must wear a hat. The boy can only find a hat on the head of a nearby monkey, so decides to take the monkey with him along to the party.

You Must Bring a Hat won the ‘book of the year’ prize after earlier winning the picture book award, beating off competition from the other category winners.

When a little boy receives an invitation from his friend Nigel to attend “the biggest, bestest, hattiest party of all time”, and the only condition for entry is that he bring a hat, he isn’t worried at first.

That’s until he discovers he can’t find a hat anywhere, except on the head of a sausage-vendor monkey who won’t part with it. The monkey agrees to accompany the boy to the party, which isn’t exactly breaking the dress code since nowhere did the invitation say you had to be wearing the hat.

The mole doorman, however, is a proper jobsworth, reeling off an increasingly absurd list of further demands: a piano-playing badger, a tutu-wearing elephant, a suitcase full of cheese . . .

The ridiculousness escalates to a pay-off that’s worth the build-up. Simon Philip tells his one-joke tale very well, while Kate Hindley illustrates with an eye for comic detail and a real compositional flair.

Despite playing villainous characters such as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, both Kray twins in Legend, and John Fitzgerald in The Revenant, Tom Hardy has proven himself to be the best bedtime story teller.

Appearing on the last CBeebies Bedtime Stories of 2016, the famed British actor read You Must Bring a Hat, by Simon Philip and Kate Hindley, alongside his dog, Woody.

Not only was his appearance a hit with children, though: many adults took to Twitter to tell of their approval of Hardy’s reading at 6.50pm on the kid's channel.

“Not gonna lie,” one Tweeter wrote, “I'm nearly 30 and yet have just sat (with my parents) through and thoroughly enjoyed the CBeebies bedtime story with Tom Hardy.”

Another noted: “On behalf of all mums out there… can I thank CBeebies for the Tom Hardy story reading tonight.”

Having only appeared in Peaky Blinders and The Revenant in 2016 (released 2015 in the US, 216 in the UK), Hardy has had a relatively quiet year. However, 2017 will see the actor appear on screens much more, playing the lead in the show Taboo, which he co-created with his father and Steven Knight, and having a part in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.
