Oceanography

Current Unit :

Semester Sp19 : Block 2

"It's very wet and blue. That's what I'd say." - Ethan Hansen (at age 7), when asked what he would say about water.

COURSE DESCRIPTION – Oceanography blends earth sciences, biology, and chemistry and requires all of the skills of scientific investigation in studying oceans. It examines the properties of water, the interaction of air and water, the motion of water, the seafloor and coastlines, the life in oceans, and the impact of humans on the ocean. Proper observation, measurement, and analysis using the proper tools and scientific methods are critical. Oceans cover over 70% of the earth’s surface and account for about 97% of its water resources. This course will improve your understanding of this gigantic portion of the earth and allow for a more educated approach in dealing with oceanic and environmental concerns with focus on the unique regional connection that Virginia has with the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay.

COURSE GOALS

- Provide the students with an understanding of the largest portion of the surface of the earth, the oceans, with specific attention on building an appreciation of Virginia’s unique estuary, the Chesapeake Bay.

- Students will explore scientific principles and techniques of investigating the natural world.

- Students will gain broader understanding of our role as stewards of the earth and the importance of applying scientific analysis in decision making for the future.
