Viruses

- non-living infectious particles

- use cells to reproduce and spread

- incredibly small

- structurally fairly simple

- each virus of a type is essentially the same

Basic Virus - Nulcleic Acid and Protein Coat

More complicated - also have a protein envelope

Bacteriophage - specifically infect bacteria, have an "alien" shape

Replication-

Lytic Cycle - viral nucleic acid and protein coat are manufactured by cell. So many are produced that the cell ruptures and the virus spreads

Lysogenic Cycle - viral nucleic acid "hides" in cell's DNA, cell reproduces. Later, the genes are turned on and it re-enters the lytic cycle

Disease Prevention:

Sanitation - keeping the environment clean (clean water, waste water)

Hygiene - keeping yourself clean

Aseptic techniques - washing surfaces, tools with disinfectants

Vaccine - use a dead/disable virus to stimulate immunity

Objectives and Vocabulary: #content

BIO.4 The student will investigate and understand life functions of Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya. Key concepts include

e) how viruses compare with organisms; and

f) evidence supporting the germ theory of infectious disease.
