Lesson: Regions of the Body

Where are your brain and appendix located?

This lesson identifies the two major cavities (and their subdivisions) and further refines the terminology that describe locations within the body.

    1. What are the two sections of the dorsal cavity, what major organ is included in each?

    2. The ventral cavity is divided into thoracic and abdominal cavities. What are the two subdivisions of each and what organs are found in these sub-sections?

    3. Be able to divide the abdominopelvic region into 4 quarters and 9 regions and correctly identify them on a patient.

    4. Distinguish between axial and appendicular skeletal sections.

Warm Ups, etc.:

Gray’s Anatomy - students analyze a diagram from the classic textbook of anatomy illustrating the abdominopelvic region to determine the proper region or quadrant.

The Space Between - Students review body cavity vocabulary

Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:

Notes - Regions of the Body

Diagrams- Regions of the Abdominopelvic Cavity- students create simplified versions of figures 1-5 and 1-6

Discussion- Etymology of the Nine Regions- discuss the terms and their roots as method to help students relate regions and remember them.

Instruction- Axial and Appendicular- differentiate between the two body regions (use two different colored pencils to illustrate the basic differences, annotate specific sections ex. pelvic girdle)

Assignment- Locating Body Parts- students provided with a list of body parts and locations, use figure 1-8 and table 1-2 to determine correct name for region.

Assessment: Using Figures 1-5, 1-6, and 1-8 students will correctly identify the location of body parts.
