Geology: Geologic History

Unit Plan: If rocks could talk, what would they tell you about their experiences through time?

This unit explores what the rock record teaches about the 4.6 billion year history of the earth. As plate tectonics and evolution have taught us, the earth and its life are in constant flux. The first unit will look at the record of life on earth, the fossils. Next, students will investigate the rock record and its clues to history. Some of these clues let us understand order and process, while other clues can give us specific times for certain events. The final part of this unit takes the fossils and other information and puts it together into the "Big Picture," especially as it relates to the history of Virginia.
