Lesson: Protein Synthesis
What is the "central dogma" of biology?
“Proteins not only make up the structural bulk of the human body, but also include the enzymes that carry out the biochemical reactions of life. They are composed of units called amino acids linked together in a long string; each string folds in a way that determines the function of a protein. The order of amino acids is set by the DNA base sequence of the gene encodes a given protein, through intermediaries called RNA; genes that actively make RNA are said to be expressed.”

Objectives and Vocabulary: #content
BIO.5 The student will investigate and understand common mechanisms of inheritance and protein synthesis. Key concepts include
h) events involved in the construction of proteins;
Transcription
mRNA
Uracil
Translation
Ribosome
Amino Acid
DNA Technology
Warm Ups, etc:
Transcription and Translation Multiple Choice - review questions for protein synthesis
T & T practice #2 - more review, this time more of a skill/applied knowledge
Molecular Genetics Review - putting the pieces together into a big picture that allows reviewing ideas from SOL 2 and SOL 3 as well.
One Big Picture - identify the parts of protein synthesis from a diagram
Activities, Assignments, Etc.
"Wann die Katzen..." - a class activity where students model protein synthesis by acting out roles of DNA, transcription to mRNA, translation as rRNA, and protein assembly involving tRNA. This activity involves a German phrase that is slowly turned into an English "Expression."
Handout - Protein Synthesis (master copy)
Review Videos - short, Crash Course
WS - Transcription & Translation Practice - modified as an activity
