Chains Link to Webs

Lecture Notes: #content

Producer - autotroph, makes its own energy (photosynthesis and chemosynthesis in certain archaebacteria)

Consumer - heterotroph, needs others for energy (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, scavengers/detrivores)

Decomposer - heterotroph that breaks down and recycles matter (eubacteria, fungi)

Food chain- the flow of energy from one organism to another

Food web - all connected food chains in an ecosystem

Pyramids - diagrams the show the flow of energy, biomass and numbers at levels in the ecosystem

Objectives and Vocabulary: #content

BIO.8 The student will investigate and understand dynamic equilibria within populations, communities, and ecosystems. Key concepts include

b) nutrient cycling with energy flow through ecosystems;

Producer

Consumer

Decomposer

Food chain

Food web

Energy pyramid

Biomass pyramid

Numbers pyramid

Activities, Assignments, Etc.

Formative Assessment - search images for food chains and webs and interpret

Assignment - WS 46-1 -

review the concepts of energy flow through food chains and food webs. Students interpret diagrams of both.
