Why do only people in SE VA hate May flies?
Common names can be confusing. What people in Surry call a "May fly" is more often recognized as a deer fly, a Diptera. The rest of the country think of May flies as Ephemeroptera. Biologists have developed a scientific naming system based on "binomial nomenclature" and hierarchies which allow organisms to be properly grouped and for all scientists to insure they are discussing the same thing. This unit describes the formation and current organization of this system from its origins with Carolus Linnaeus.
