Lesson: Introduction to A&P

What do the terms "anatomy," "physiology," and "pathology" mean?

This lesson establish the three critical points of focus for the study of this class and creates a framework for understanding of different levels of organization within the body.

Warm Ups, etc.:

Biology: Past, Present and Future - students share some memories and answer anticipatory questions. Students also record the three critical definitions.

In Sickness and in Health- students share a medical event from their own life or from someone close to them. They may share them, but all are read by teacher to determine possible points of interest in future discussion.

Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:

Introduction to A&P- Syllabus, Classroom Policies, Course Outline, Lab & Classroom Safety and Brinkman

Notes - Terms and Levels

Discussion - Autopsy - go over the description in the book, discuss issues facing medical examiners/coroners

Activity- Drug discussion - (Prescription/ Over-the-counter/Illegal) - Indications, Precautions, method of delivery/dosage, Mechanism/Effects, Side effects

Assignment- Levels of Organization- examine diagram on page 3. Using the diagram as a starting block, create a list that both defines the levels illustrated and explains/describes/shows the information in the image giving specific examples for each level (consult table of contents and use as an opportunity to explore textbook.) Chemical - 7 chemicals for life Cell - 3 different cells in your body Tissue - the 4 types Organ & Organ Systems - 1 each for the 11 systems

- students then compare, explain, defend their system to their group
