Scientific Investigation

Unit Plan:

Why is it important to establish systems of investigation and measurement in the proper application of scientific pursuits?

This unit teaches three lessons. First, it establishes the vocabulary and means of constructing/deconstructing words that are used frequently. Next, the lesson guides the students through the scientific process. Students will perform research, construct hypotheses, and collect and analyze data using the appropriate tools, methods and units of measurement. Variables will be manipulated and results will be evaluated. The third part of this unit involves building and reinforcing map reading skills. Earth Science is often done on a very large scale, so maps are frequently used to share information- so it is essential that students gain mastery of the ability to glean information when presented on maps.
