Lesson: Skeletal Anatomy and Physiology

What are the structures and functions of the the skeleton?

Students will learn about the composition, formation and classification of bones. This unit will focus on building a broad knowledge of bone location and how the anatomy of individual bones play a role in determining how they assist in biological functions.

Warm Ups, etc:

Intro to Skeletal System - question that review prior knowledge and the concepts introduced in unit 4

206 divided by 4

Bred in the Bone - this reviews the basics of bone classification and skeletal functions

Skull Review - students are asked to identify features of the skull and particular bones (in preparation for quiz)

Axial vs. Appendicular - students build their knowledge of bone location by classifying bones based on their location within the body.

Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:

Deer Skeleton - Introductory Activity

Students are divided into two groups. Each group is provided with a box of bones containing a nearly complete (and cleaned) juvenile deer skeleton. Without any prior instructions the students are asked to empty the contents, make observations and organize the bones into a model of a deer on the table tops. Students must work cooperatively and discuss features of the bones that assist in placing them in the proper place. Students should be advised to think of their own skeleton, as the deer is a close vertebrate relative. Because the deer are different sexes and juveniles, it also introduces concepts of skeletal fusion and gender specific skeletal features.
