Week 14 (4.29-5.3)

Monday, April 29

I was the guide for a total of four kayaking trips this weekend. They covered the same area, but I had four completely different experiences. Eagles, osprey, herons, red-winged blackbird, wood duck, river otter, muskrat, turtles, fiddler crabs, blue crabs, arrow arum, wild rice, phragmites... Get out and spend some time in nature, folks!

Week 13 (4.22-26)

Friday, April 26

Today is Arbor Day, which is about trees. One of the things I have loved about living in the same place for so long is watching my trees grow. Some have died, some have been blown over, but I have seen so many grow to flower in the spring, provide shade in the summer and provide their fruits and nuts.

Thursday, April 25

As you grow up and become responsible for your own schedules and time management, make sure you follow up with people and confirm appointments. Especially if lots of people are impacted by your actions (or lack thereof...)

Wednesday, April 24

On this date in 1925 the trial of John Scopes began in Tennessee. In the end, he was found guilty of teaching evolution and fined $100.

Tuesday, April 23

Start thinking about scheduling disruptions. Modified blocks for SOL testing (posted), activity periods for "Decision Day" and the academic awards, as well as other things...

Monday, April 22

While not celebrated as holiday, today is Earth Day. Do something nice for the planet, it's the only one we've got.

Week 12 (4.15-19)

Friday, April 19

Sticking to yesterday's theme, here's a record of the 72 flights.

Thursday, April 18

The goal was 5 flights over several months. The outcome, over 70 flights for three years. The Mars helicopter "Ingenuity" has officially ended service after a hard landing and broken rotor blade.

Wednesday, April 17

I apologize if you find things a little boring today. I've finally reached the end of my wardrobe and have to start repeating shirts.

Tuesday, April 16

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to feel the pull of summer.

Monday, April 15

"I survived Brinkman's field trip!" (there is a required survey for full credit)

Week 11 (4.8-12)

Friday, April 12

Fall Zone Field Trip - putting 330 million year old rock under our feet...and more!

Thursday, April 11

The weather looks good for the field trip - low 70s, no rain. Dress appropriately, wear the proper footwear, pack a lunch/snacks and bring a water bottle. I LOVE this site and am looking forward to sharing it.

Wednesday, April 10

Modified schedules for Thursday and Friday (SOL simulations where applicable.)

Tuesday, April 9

I hope everyone had a great break. Field trip weather for Friday looks good!

Monday, April 8

While I may not be at school today (dentist appt.), I should be showing up for the eclipse.

Week 10 (3.25-28)

Thursday, March 28

Enjoy your breaks. I will be absent on Monday, April 8 and posting assignments on the Daily Log and Daily Modules. I will see you for the eclipse (weather permitting!)

Wednesday, March 27

Soooo...the power came back on about 15 minutes after dismissal yesterday. Any assignments that were due today are pushed back to tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 26

How do you feel about the budding and flowering plants? Pear trees are done, cherries are wrapping up, redbuds are at their peak, apple and crabapple trees are next.

Monday, March 25

While the big astronomical news is the solar eclipse in two weeks, there will be a partial lunar eclipse tonight. The full moon will turn pinkish-orange as it passes through the earth's penumbra (the lighter part of the shadow)  from 12:53 - 5:32, peaking at 3:13 am.

Week 9 (3.18-22)

Friday, March 22

If you got 25 cents for every 9 weeks you've spent in school this year, today you'd have three quarters.

Thursday, March 21

Do you owe me any missing work? Were your module checklists not complete but you still have the items in your notebook or bookbag? Did you forget to pass in a module checklist? Q3 ends tomorrow...

Wednesday, March 20

It's a "Red Flag Day," which means it is supposed to be dry and windy. Don't light fires outside. Also, Q3 draws to a close. Midterm exams will take place over the next few days.

Tuesday, March 19

At 11:06 pm EDT (0406Z) the sun crosses the equator and we celebrate the astronomical Vernal Equinox. Happy Spring!

Activity schedule today, exams later this week.

Week 8 (3.11-15)

Happy Pi Day! Modified schedule on Monday, midterms next week.

Wednesday, March 13

Looking for something to do on this beautiful afternoon? Come out and support the soccer team's home opener against Greensville.

Looks like a nice week ahead. Get outside and photosynthesize.

Monday, March 11

I have seen the future. It includes flying cars.

Week 7 (3.4-8)

Friday, March 8

Be good. Do your work. Be good. Have a good weekend.

Thursday, March 7

Just because I won't be here tomorrow doesn't mean there won't be things to do. Be good, get your work done, be good, and have a good weekend.

Also - there will be a tornado drill today. Duck and cover as instructed.

Wednesday, March 6

There seems to be a lot of water falling out of the sky. The ground is also wet.

Tuesday, March 5

I am staying for tutoring today. Modified schedule Thursday, and I will be absent Friday.

Monday, March 4

I took full advantage of the weekend's weather. Lots of time in the garden and I fired up the grill.

Week 6 (2.26-3.1)

March 1, 2024

Admittedly, I left the house a few minutes later than usual, but, for the first time in MONTHS, the sun was up when I drove to work.

Thursday, February 29

Happy Leap Day. Get your work done.

Wednesday, February 28

It takes the earth 365.24 days to orbit the sun. Every four years we add a day. That day is tomorrow, a day out of time...or "asynchronous."

Tuesday, February 27

Modified activity schedule tomorrow and "asynchronous" day on Thursday.

Monday, February 26

It was a great weekend. Nice days and a bit of rain. I spent a lot of time in my garden with a shovel.

Wednesday, February 21

We are about one quarter of the way through the semester. That also means that we are about 5/8ths through the school year.

Thursday, February 15

While SOFIA is retired, it's still helping us look for water in space.

Wednesday, February 14
