This unit establishes critical understanding for the study of biological oceanography. Major abiotic factors including energy flow and the division of oceans based on physical features will be investigated. The foundations of investigations of life will examine the presence of viruses and bacteria and the limited role of plants and fungus. The primary producers of ocean ecosystems are phytoplankton and algae, which will be examined in greater detail.
