During her fall internship, Marysa Sundberg (12) received guidance from instructor Jennifer Monahan at Sturgis Elementary School . “I am interested in being a kindergarten teacher and I wanted to get experience and try it out,” Sundberg said. “I wanted to see if I would still like it if I did it everyday.” In order to take an internship, Sundberg said she talked with instructor Coleen Keffeler. She was able to spend everyday at SES and discern whether or not education was the path for her.

This last semester, I spent the first block at an internship and I had so much fun. I was an intern for Mrs. Monahan, a kindergarten teacher at Sturgis Elementary School, and I would help children learn their letters and numbers. I also assisted Mrs. Monahan with any work that she needed done.

In preparation for my internship, other than basic math and reading skills, there were not many classes that I needed to have previously completed. However, I would have liked to take child development and psychology before my internship.

I believe that these two classes would have given me more of an introduction to children and how they learn.

In the future, I plan on becoming a kindergarten teacher. The internship was a great way to try out the career and see if I like it, before I spent four years in college studying to be a teacher.

This experience has helped me grow as a person and get out of my comfort zone. It helped prepare me for my future and it confirmed that I would love being a teacher.
