Machining is a class that not every high schools offer, but fortunately SBHS does. In fact, there are a large number of students who enjoy taking the class.
“The class itself is very fun,” Dominic Fisher (12) said. “I like it a lot.”
Fischer took the course in the fall and now assists instructor Cyle Miller as his teacher’s aide.
Taking machining in high school could lead to a potential career pathway. Some of the students find out that they really enjoy the projects and the class, which helps them with their future decisions.
Tristan Zook (12) said, “I’ve actually decided to go into machining because of this class.”
Miller created a top competition to provide students more time on the lathes, learning the ins and outs of the machines as well as allowing them to engage in a fun activity while getting a grade. Individuals who spent time on their competition entries realized the fruits of their efforts.
Zook, who took first place in the competition, said, “I did a lot of research. I got a little bit more serious than everybody else did.”
According to Zook, he searched for different ways to create a top that would out-spin its competitors. Once started, Zook’s top rotated for an average of ten minutes.

Jarrett Boyd (10) enjoyed learning the different dynamics of a top and getting to put the time in on the lathes. “It helps you improve your skills,” he said.
There is talk about expanding the opportunities in the machining classes by offering a dual enrollment course through Western Dakota Tech. For more information, speak with student services or Miller.
