On your marks, get set, GO! The Sturgis track season is at the starting line for the 2018-2019 season. This year’s first meet was held in Rapid City on Wednesday, Mar. 27.
“For being the first meet of the season, I think that our team competed pretty well but we have a lot of room for improvement,” Makayla Keffeler (10) said. Keffeler competed in the triple jump at this week’s meet.
Last year, the Sturgis Brown High School track team took home the girl’s Black Hills Conference championship.
“Last year was a really good season for us overall,” Brady Buchholz (10) said. “We had a lot of good runners and jumpers who we, sadly, lost this year who helped rack up our team points this last season.”
“I am really excited for this year’s season and what it has to bring for us. The team really needs to push themselves to their full ability and compete hard every single day and meet so we do well in competition,” Dezmond Rhodes (9) said.
Overall, Sturgis track team did well at their first meet of the season and are hoping to become better with the meets upcoming.
Throughout the next few weeks, athletes and coaches are hoping to have pretty much a meet-after-meet schedule, depending on what the weather brings.
After a few minutes of prep on the starting line, Blake McNaught (12), Nathan Salazar (10), Daylen Rhodes (11) and Fauna Permann (9) push themselves into the 100m dash.
Freshmen Brooklyn Hanks and Fauna Permann run 200m sprints against teammates during practice.
Practicing a triple jump, Makayla Keffeler leaps into the sand pit.
Completing his long jump, Justin Burnham (11) lands in the sand.
At the throwing range, Kiara Rath (10) practices throwing her discus.
