Athletes vie for cheer team positions

by Sierra Lippert

During the course of three days, girls from grades 8th to 11th got the chance to audition for cheer teams. Tryouts started after school in the wrestling room on April 9 where girls signed up for squads of interest to them.

The next two days were for each girl to work on techniques needed in order to make the team; the required fields are jumps, tumbles, cheer, chant and dance. The athletes took part in a two-day course from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Giving them a better chance to qualify for the team.

Individuals tried out for the team because they love cheering. Those who tried out for another season want to continue the activity because it’s a lot of fun and you meet a lot of new people and make new friends along the way.

“This upcoming year will be my fourth year as a cheerleader,” Jessica Watson (9) said, having cheered throughout middle school.

“I decided to try cheer because I liked it in middle school and thought I was good so, I decided that I’d join in high school also,” Haven Huck (9) said.

People have their own opinions about cheerleaders that may not be positive.

“Cheerleading is a lot of fun. Most people think we’re snotty, but really we’re not,” Watson and Huck said.

Cheerleading is a sport that takes skill and a lot of practice. Working hard because they love what they do, cheerleaders learn the skills and get to help support their teams by getting the crowd pumped up and cheering alongside them.
