Every October everyone starts to feel the chills of Mother Nature. Some people try to curl up and retain body heat while others break open and flourish. However, many people take the cold air as a boosting breath of fresh air, using the month of October, otherwise known as childhood cancer prevention month, as optimistic motivation to promote fundraisers for childhood cancer.
During childhood prevention month, there are not separated days for the individual cancer types, which is not nearly as important as using funds to find cures for all types of cancer. It is everyone’s hope that information gained through research will help scientists and doctors find a cure.
With every disease, there are situations that can make tough situations even more difficult, such as birthdays, weddings, graduations, and other life-changing events. These days can be difficult to miss, but cancer is a very needy adversary.
The disease diagnosis may be confusing at first and you never truly get into a routine while in the hospital or running to and from check ups. In all of the hectic running around, it is very hard to get a set schedule. However, where there is a will, there is a way.
Eventually, while a schedule may be difficult to set, you start to figure out when appointments work best and how to schedule other details, so that moving to and from visits becomes a straight line instead of backtracking where you have already been.
There are, of course, anomalies to everything. The hospital has set times for diagnostics, such as MRIs. All of their morning appointments, for example, are reserved for children who need to be put under, so they stay still. This scenario is also the case for many other medical procedures since medical professionals need to be very precise and accurate.
There are always positives to look at when you are going through such a traumatic situation, which may be viewed as very unimportant and very small on a large scale, but going through a difficult situation needs all of the positive outlooks possible. Whether it’s just telling someone to have a good morning while passing in a hallway or realizing that there are other people struggling just as much as you.
There are a lot of hurtful, disheartening things that happen in the hospital, making it hard to keep a positive attitude, but you need to fight and you need to keep strength because you can beat it. It is easier to stay motivated with a positive attitude.
If you view it with an opposing perspect: Who would you rather try help, someone who is positive or negative?
That is what therapists are trying to do, help. Whether it is OT, PT, speech, etc., keeping a positive point of view helps them do their jobs easier. Even though October has passed, don’t be sad about the snow. Instead, be thankful and happy because of all you have.
