I completed my internship at The Real Estate Center for about 50 hours in the fall semester of 2011. I want to major in Business Management in college and that’s why I was placed at The Real Estate Center, to learn as much as I could.
A lesson I learned is to save all your information and to not trust that the computer has all your work. It was difficult trying to work on something the computer was still supposed to have, find out it was missing, and then to take time out from other work to reenter information into the computer. I also learned that it’s better to get along with your coworkers then to struggle with them because it makes your job more enjoyable and keeps a business running smoothly.
Learning how to use QuickBooks when reconciling all of the check information early entered for receivables and expendables for The Real Estate Center gave me a sense of pride. I had to work hard finding ways to understand some programs on the computer for projects I was given. I had to think outside of the box to get my work finished on the computer.
I don’t regret interning at The Real Estate Center because I learned more about the career I want to go into and about myself. I am still interested in going into Business Management because you have a lot of important things to do to keep a business running and to me that’s fun. I also learned about myself; I am organized, friendly, and hard working. The only thing I would do differently would be to intern at a business willing to teach me how to run it as well as a business reflective of my personal interests.
I am thankful for everything I did learn through the youth internship program, and I would recommend students try internships because they help you find out what you want to do for a career.
