As social media is continuing to expand and globalizing, you can see new trends arise. Throughout this last year, Tik Tok has become very popular. Many teenagers have become famous off of this new app.
One of the most famous teens on Tik Tok is Charlie D’amelio. According to the app Tik Tok on March 2, 2021, she has a following of 109.1 Million. Before starting her social media career, D’amelio was a competitive dancer for 10 years.
According to Gabrielle Bernardini’s article on July 21, 2020, D’amelio gets paid an estimated amount of $25,000 per Tik Tok video. The article also states that the rising social media star is a net worth of over $4 million. Staying up to date with the newest trends and expectations keeps D’amelio’s following up high.
Some trends here around the school include Nike Air Forces, white Vans, Tik Tok dances, high rise and holy jeans, perms, leopard print, and mullets. Trends have influenced students' lives.
Jessica Teigen (9) said “I think the most popular trend in our school is on our feet. Air Force 1s and Vans are extremely popular among students. The bucket hat trend has quite simply changed my life. I wear my bucket hat nearly every day.”
Jillian Beck (12) considered T-shirts over hoodies the most popular trend here at the school. Trends in changing style have become very popular and have influenced many people, not only students here at SBHS.
Mariah Jeans (12) said “A popular trend that has affected me is needing to “be fashionable” or “ In style,” because, over the years, that thought has affected me enormously. Social media, magazines, even the kids in our schools will look at you weird if you aren’t wearing something somewhat close to what is trending. This affects me in being influenced to think I need to have a good body not too fat but not too skinny. But say you are a bigger girl and you wear a crop top; it’s considered ‘disgusting,’ so it’s like there really is no in-between. You have to look perfect to in a sense ‘fit in’.”
Some trends have made it harder for people to fit in and not more fun for them. Trends can come in many different ways and last for different amounts of time. As the media expands the more trends we see arise, and you can predict what trends might show up in the near future.
Online Shopping Gains Customers

During quarantine, people developed new addictions, such as surfing the internet to see what could be found.
Since the mandatory shut down, people could not go to stores and get the supplies they needed. Online shopping became a huge help to everyone throughout this past year. Most people like the convenience of online shopping.
“My favorite aspect of online shopping is that it is convenient and cheaper,” Pam Gies said. “I do not have to drive around to each store to try to find what I need. If I need a cream top, I can go online and just buy that one thing instead of driving around Rapid City, trying to find it. I online shop about three times a week.”
Online shopping can also be a huge help if individuals are unable to leave the house or if they do not have time to go to stores.
“I like online shopping because I don't have to leave my house. I can just do it at home,” Maggie Brink (10) said. “Some of my favorite stores to shop at are Shein, Princess Polly and a few others.”
In spite of all the conveniences of online shopping, there is a downside.
“My least favorite aspect of online shopping is that sometimes you do not know the quality of the items you are buying,” Gies said. “The material might look like a waffle knit and be something completely different. The sizing at specific stores may fit weird. Another downside is that when I am online shopping, I also am not spending the money locally. It can also be easier to just put stuff in your online cart throughout the day, so you buy more. Right now I have 25 items in my cart. ”
With your online shopping, not only can individuals look at the store right on their phones, but they may also have more of a variety of items to choose from.
“The only time I shop online is for either basketball shoes or clothing,” Thor Sundstrom (12) said. “I would say about two times a month I will shop online. My favorite online store is Nike.”
Sundstrom said he spends an average of around $200 at each store when he online shops. “You also get more of a variety when you shop online instead of in-store,” he said.
Online shopping can become an addiction, and before they know it, individuals can start shopping online more often than they realize.
Attendance secretary Pam Anderson said she also shops a lot online. “I online shop weekly, usually about two times a week,” she said.
Some of Anderson’s favorite stores include Amazon, Doterra and boutiques. The average she spends at each store is around $100, requiring more storage space for her purchases.
“I have three rooms with three different closets for my clothes, but they are for the different seasons,” Anderson said.
There can be many advantages and disadvantages to online shopping. With the new Covid virus, the usage of online shopping has increased. A potential benefit is to have groceries or other necessities delivered to the door.
However, a new addiction or trend of online shopping is yet another popular use for the internet.
Senior Shelby Roberts-Roe online shops for her graduation dress. She picked out a few different dresses online until she found the perfect one.
