At the beginning of March, the high school volleyball program started the annual little girls volleyball season.

For the past several years, the high school volleyball program throws this fundraiser to help acquire new jerseys, equipment, camps and travel expenses.

This year, there were a total of five teams. Three teams were from Sturgis and two were from Piedmont. Every team had one or two high school players assigned to help the coach.

Coach of the green team, Brinley Pickett (10) said, “I chose to help out because I love watching the teams get better and start using the tips we give them.”

Throughout this 5-week season, coaches tried to teach the girls how to overhand serve, pass and set the ball.

The hardest part about coaching, Makayla Keffeler (10) said is, “not expecting too much from them.” Keffeler said. “Sometimes I forget it’s many of the girls’ first season.”

This program tries to get as many girls interested at a younger age. Posters and emails are sent to raise interest.

Every Thursday in the month of April was set aside for games. The five teams took turns playing each other. Due to inclement weather no tourney was held.

Ella Johnson (10) said she hoped the little girls volleyball program would continue, because she believes “it helps peak interest in the sport and gets the girls practicing before middle school and high school seasons.”
