My experience from my last semester at the Northern Hills Veterinary Clinic definitely paid off. Over the course of the summer, Dr. Scott Cammack contacted me to have me help when the days were overwhelming, which gave me a sense of accomplishment, knowing that he could ask for my help and I could be of use to them.
Dr. Cammack is an exceptional veterinarian. He not only takes pride in his animals, but he also takes pride in the people. He is very passionate about his job, and is a joy to be around. Each day is never the same when I am there, and my duties always differ from day to day. Some of my duties include, administering vaccines, setup for castrations, spray water during dentals, holding horses and trotting horses for lameness examinations. I became better at each of these tasks over the course of the semester with practice.
I have always had an interest in animals and helping them get better. Throughout high school, I have taken the Intro to Ag, plant science and animal science classes. This courses helped me broaden my knowledge and helped me be more efficient at the clinic.
The internship helped me make real life connections with what I have learned in the classroom; however, I think I should have taken human anatomy prior to my internship. That class would have helped me understand how humans function and would have been beneficial at the clinic where Dr. Cammack is looking for what is wrong with normal functioning systems.
After my first internship with Dr. Cammack, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I soon realized how much pressure he was under and thought that being a technician would be a better choice. After learning about how much work a veterinary technician does and how much they make, I decided against being a technician as well.
However, through many appointments, I did learn how to massage horses.
This internship has taught me that I need to find a career that I love and make sure that I get paid enough for what I do.
Dr. Cammack has forever changed my first impression on veterinarians. I always thought that most veterinarians were out to get your money and did not care about your pet.
Dr. Cammack has proven that his number one goal is to make the patient and owner’s experiences comfortable and affordable. I love watching him work and I love seeing how the owners are pleased with the results from the treatment.
I will greatly miss being here and I am very appreciative for what they have done for me this past year.
