On Sept. 25, SBHS’s cheer team welcomed five teams to their own home gym for a cheer and dance competition. Throughout the beginning of this school year and the summer, cheer and dance teams have been working hard for this year’s performances.

“We competed against Hot Springs, Custer, Belle Fourche, Douglas and Rapid City Central,” Tanya Taylor, SBHS’s cheer and dance team coach said.

Practicing many days throughout the weeks since mid-July, the entire cheer team has been ready to place 1st in competitions.

The team also prepared to show the entire student body their stunts and cheers. Throughout different school gatherings, such as pep assemblies and other special school events, the athletes showed off their hard work.

“We won first place at our Custer competition,” Arianna Gorczewski (10) said, “and it made us so happy. It was great to see our hard work pay off.” Gorczewski is the main base for the cheer team.

On Tuesday’s competition, the cheer team was excited to say that they earned third place amongst all six teams who attended.

“I do believe we deserved third place, not only for the hard work, but for the hard stunts that we added throughout our stunts,” Gorczewski said. “We also added a lot more tumbling.”

The team of hyped-up cheerleaders worked hard every day after school for special events, such as the competition held Tuesday. Athletes worked hard to accomplish each and every goal they set for themselves.

“I think it was a very great accomplishment when we hit all of our stunts, especially our pyramid, which we’ve worked very hard on perfecting,” Taylor said. “Their hard work has really paid off. I’m very proud of them.”
