Coach Derris Buus has coached basketball for 22 years. Head coach for 12 of those years, Buus coached girls basketball for five years and boys for 17 years. Buus has coached for Winner, Rapid City Stevens, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, and currently, Sturgis Brown.

Under Buus’s tutelage, two teams who had the most success were the 2007-2008 Winner girls basketball team with a record of 20-6 and got fourth at the state tournament, and 2012-2013 Stevens boys basketball team who went 20-6 and also got fourth in the state tournament. Buus said his best moment was the 2007-2008 region championship game when they held their opponent to 18 points in the game to go to state.

“I enjoy the game of basketball and teaching kids,” Buus said.

There will be new faces on the varsity basketball team as five seniors graduated from high school last year. The three toughest opponents they’ll face are Mitchell, Yankton and Rapid City Central. This season will mark Buus’s third year of coaching in Sturgis.

“I look forward to the kids in the program and I also look forward to how the season’s going to go,” Buus said. “I really enjoy coaching basketball in Sturgis, S.D.. It’s a blast coaching these Sturgis kids.”
