At 11:19am on April 20, 1999, Rachel Scott was the first victim of the Columbine School Shooting.

Scott was just like any other high school senior. She had hobbies and classes she liked; however, she was also different then most. Scott never gave up on society.

“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, thenit will start a chain reaction of the same,” Scott said.

Her many journals to God about her willingness to try and make people better as a whole created something inspiring.

Scott’s death resulted in the founding of Rachel’s Challenge, a student-motivating and teacher-empowering program dedicated to create and sustain safe and supportive learning environments.

On Feb. 24, Sturgis Williams Middle School hosted an assembly for their students about Rachel’s Challenge with a presentation for 7th and 8th grade at 8:30am and another presentation for 5th and 6th graders at 10:00am.

Eighth grader Maddy Karrels said, “It opens up your eyes about the dangers of bullying.”

The students at SWMS learned a very powerful lesson that day. Bullying speaks volumes, and anyone can stand up to it and help the cause.
