Transitioning between sports or into the off-season is big for an athlete.

Whether it means preparing for a new season or lifting weights, most athletes are just as occupied during the off-season as they are during the on-season. Lifting weights is a big part of staying fit throughout the year.

Regarding off-season lifting, Robert Merwin (12) said, “ If you put in the work then you will see a better result.”

Merwin is a wrestler for SBHS and spends a lot of time in the weight room throughout the year. He knows first hand how much lifting during the off-season affects someone's ability to perform well in sports.

Sometimes, the off-season helps athletes improve in their sports more than during the season.

Jack Knutson (9) said, “I think that the off-season allows you to work on things that you learned from the previous season, so that the next season you can be better and learn new things.”

Between working in the weight room and getting the mechanics down in your sport, putting in work is the key to becoming a better athlete. There are also many ways to make the transition between the on-season and off-season smoother.

Konner Berndt (11) said, “From on-season to off-season, take a week to have to yourself then get back into the lifting and offseason practices if there are some.”

Transitioning smoothly between seasons helps individuals get back into the swing of the games and overall improves their commitment to get better in the on-season or off-season. It is also important to transition smoothly into different sports when playing sports year round.

Austin Atyeo (10) said, “Making the transition from on-season to off-season, I always take a week break in between sports, which I do in order to give myself a break before my next sport.”

Taking a week off in between sports helps athletes physically and mentally prepare for the next season.

From lifting to preparing for the next sport, the off-season is key to becoming a better athlete. Putting in work in the off-season is what separates good athletes from great athletes.
