This October, SBHS' Black Magic

dance team won their second-ever Black Hills Conference Competition with a thanks to first-year coach Karlee Gibbins.

The dance team scored 210 points in their pom dance and 190 points in their hip-hop dance with an average of 203 points, beating two other teams.

“To be completely honest, [I didn’t think we would win] because of the fact we had a lot of hiccups because of COVID, and I felt some parts were not ready,” Gibbins said, “Also, the judges have not been on our side; they’ve been really hard on our girls for some reason. But, the girls did an amazing job and they really proved me wrong.”

According to Gibbins, two out of the seven girls were out for two weeks and they missed two competitions.

Gibbins said, “It’s hard enough being a high school coach during COVID, but it’s a whole different ball game being a brand-new high school coach during COVID.”

“If you work hard for it, you are going to get it,” Gibbins said. “Work hard for anything that you want in life and you can achieve it. I have certain expectations for the dance girls and they know that they need to meet those expectations. That’s something I appreciate and that’s something I will always tell everybody.”
