STURGIS, S.D. -- Created by juniors Eliza Gruba and Lauren Fritz, "A Plastic World" is an example of upcycling items that would otherwise be thrown away and often times making their way into oceans.

According to art instructor DeVee Dietz, "Every year around eight million metric tons of plastic is discarded into the ocean. Humans litter harmful waste, such as straws, bags, and bottle caps into marine habitats, causing great harm to marine life due to consumption or bondage from the manmade waste. Our trash does not belong in their homes."

Inspired by artist Denise Hughes, Gruba and Fritz's work was constructed outside of classtime over a two-month period. It was made from foam board, plastic and metal lids, paint and held together with hot glue. photo by DeVee Dietz
