Christmas Traditions

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. So, what traditions are being celebrated?

The holiday means something different to everyone, whether its family, friends, or food. Either way, people are making memories to last a lifetime.

“The best part about this holiday season is the laughter and memories we make,” freshmen Serra Schrempp and Jolyn Lories said. “Having a chill time with my family, whether it was the dinner or the presents, we always had a good time.”

The season can look the same in many places, lights, trees and snowmen. However, everyone notices something different and something a little more special.

“On Christmas Eve, we opened our presents and had a chill time eating our dinner,” Lories said. “On Christmas morning, we would open Santa’s gifts, then we would gather and have a completely homemade dinner: wine, beer, German sausage, ham, turkey. We’d have all the fixings.”

It’s always sacred for family traditions to be held for generations. Schrempp has a few personal favorites, some as simple as a box of cereal. Then, the children can open it on Christmas Eve and eat their new cereal on Christmas morning.

“We got a box of cereal for every Christmas,” Schrempp said. “Since we didn’t have the money to get this every week, this was very special. It really helped to remind us to be grateful for the little things.”

Sometimes the traditions are a plan for the future seasons of the children’s life, such as getting a gift that can be put to use for every upcoming year.

“Another tradition is giving each kid a new ornament as a gift, so when they move out they can take all of their ornaments to put on their tree,” Schrempp said.

Some of the most common traditions are still momentous and can vary from each household. Even if the only tradition has been coming together to have a big dinner.

“We would go out and have a sleigh ride pulled by my dad’s big Belgian horses all around the neighborhood,” Lories said. “Then we would go ice skating on a dam with on-a-fire hot cocoa and hot dogs. Everything was decorated in only blue lights.”

Everyone has a favorite part or parts of Christmas, something to look forward to doing every year, such as night drives down streets of bright lights.

“My favorite part of Christmas was and will always be all of our family getting together, and the decorating,” Lories said.

Creating new traditions was slightly disregarded by individuals interviewed. However, the most special traditions are the ones that are just made and not planned.

“I love to see the traditions of my childhood move on down through my children and my grandchildren,” Janet Bies said.

Even if people don't celebrate any traditions during this season, it’s still an important time of the year where people can come together, have a good time, and create new memories with their family and friends.
