Joann Williamson, contributorCurrently, I am a senior participating in an internship at Karen Simmons CPA office in town under the supervision of accountant Anita Silvers.
While at the training site, I participate in many different activities, including recording checks, timesheets, mailing bills, balancing statements, transferring information, and any new project they need help with.
While at school, I have not been able to take the classes I would like to take but understand the circumstances. I would have liked to take Accounting 1 and 2 to better my knowledge in accounting because Accounting is such a huge vast career.
When finishing up in the spring, I have high hopes of getting my associates degree in accounting and doing books from home. My future plans do have some part in my training site because I have plans to either be an accountant or be a bookkeeper for local businesses.
This internship has benefited me in many ways. For one it has taught me a lot of basics of accounting and the different aspects involved. The more activities I do, the more I have learned.
I will now have experience to use in the future and was also offered a job at my internship site this next semester to work during tax season when Karen’s office makes 75% of their profit.
When first starting the internship I was very hesitant and unsure about how much help it would be for me but now feel so included. I arrive at the training site and am given different projects to perform, using Excel, QuickBooks, or Pro DMS, a scanning program. The staff all treat me the same and are willing and free to answer any questions I have.
Moving on after high school, I will be able to take this very beneficial experience and learning tools with me to help me throughout college and will know a little how it will be when I own my own business someday.
If needed to give any advice to another student, I would tell each to pick a place of interest and do an internship there. No matter what you are interested in, you can see and learn everything involved and whether you want to specialize in that field or not.
Internship, one helpful thing I can really thank Sturgis Brown High School faculty for!!! J
