Any time fluids are removed under pressure from a pressure vessel there is the risk of creating static electricity. When removing fluids as compressor oil or production fluids there is the risk that static electricity could cause a spark creating an ignition source when flammable fluids or gas is present. When using a metal container to drain fluids, the container should be "Bonded" to the compressor skid to help prevent static electricity build up.
Employees removing compressor oil or sampling of compressor oil from pressure vessels need to be aware of the possibility of Hazardous gas. Employees should be aware that units could contain flammable and toxic gasses. Potential for the possible hazards of gas ignition, fire, burns from hot surfaces & hot fluids. Risk of possible concentration of H2S. Hazardous gases could be in the units pressure vessels, cooler, or associated piping and risk of inhalation of hazardous gas fumes. Environmental spill of compressor oil and production fluids
