The purpose of this procedure is to establish the minimum requirements for removing and installing the engine water pump Fan Hub on General Motors 5.7 Vortec style engines as laid out in this procedure.
This procedure applies to all General Motors 5.7 Vortec style engines on Flogistix skids equipped with the General Motors 5.7 Vortec engine drive units that are currently in service in the Field, Test Loop, at a Repair Shop, or in Storage Yards. Flogistix Service Technicians will perform the torque procedure as outlined in this procedure.
Before any work is performed a JSA needs to be done according to Flogistix procedure along with any Customer requirements before any work is started.
GM 5.7 Water pump Fan hub removal procedure
The procedure of removing the threaded Fan hub off of the Water Pump can be done with it mounted on the engine or with it removed from the engine.
For Removal of the the 5.7 Water Pump follow the procedure 1.03.016 with the included link 1.03.016 GM 5.7 (350) Water Pump removal and installation procedure
If the Water Pump is still mounted on the engine the Serpentine belt will need to be removed. Pay close attention to how the Serpentine belt is routed around the various sheaves on the engine. The belt will need to be reinstalled on the engine after the Fan hub has been removed and replaced.
This procedure will require a small pipe wrench and a larger pipe wrench being an 18" or larger size or a large adjustable pliers that is large enough to fit the outside diameter of the Fan hub.
Using a small pipe wrench with it adjusted to almost the smallest setting, install it as illustrated in the example below, to where the thin Belt Sheave is between the Jaws of the small pipe wrench.
Adjust the larger Pipe wrench to fit the outer diameter of the Fan hub. The fan hub is threaded on the water pump with standard rotation threads. If standing in front of the engine looking at the water pump the Fan Hub will need to be turned Counter Clockwise to be removed.
Put the large pipe wrench on the outer diameter of the Fan hub as illustrated in the example below.
Letting the small pipe wrench move against the water pump housing when rotating the sheave, watching out for sharp edges and pinch points apply downward force on the large pipe wrench to loosen the Fan Hub.
Once the Fan hub comes loose it should be easily spun off by hand. As shown in the example below
To install the Fan Hub reverse the same procedure for removing the Fan hub.
After removing or installing the Fan Hub, inspect the Fan Hub and belt Sheave for any damages. Replace if any Damage to Fan Hub or Belt Sheave is found.
** There are Specialty Tools made for removing the Fan Hub from the Water pump. The use of these Specialty Tools if available would eliminate having to use the two pipe wrenches as mentioned in this procedure.
