This is to be used as a reference for finding a compatible oil that is approved by Cummins for use in a Cummins Natural Gas engine.
The purpose of this document is to establish the Recommendations for Lubricating Oil in Cummins Natural Gas Engines on Flogistix compressor or pump packages per Cummins Inc.
This document applies to all Flogistix units that are equipped with Cummins Natural Gas engines currently in service. This will affect all units in the field, at a repair shop, and in storage yards.
This document outlines the proper application and maintenance of engine oil for engines manufactured by Cummins Inc. The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to update and simplify Cummins Inc. recommendations and guidelines per Cummins Service Bulletin # 3810340 dated Dec-04-2009. A copy of the PDF is attached to this procedure at the bottom of this page.
Cummins Inc. bases oil drain recommendations on oil performance classifications and duty cycle. Maintaining the correct oil and filter change interval is a vital factor in preserving the integrity of an engine. Consult the Cummins Operation and Maintenance Manual for detailed instructions on determining the oil change interval for the type of engine.
The use of quality engine oils combined with appropriate oil and filter change intervals are critical factors in maintaining engine performance and durability. Cummins Inc. recommends the use of a high quality SAE 15W-40 and SAE 40 engine oil for natural gas and propane engines. The specific performance category of oil recommended is a function of the design of the natural gas engine as outlined below.
· SAE 15W-40 viscosity
· Less than 0.6 percent sulfated ash
· TBN (ASTM D4739) 5.0 min
· 250 to 350 ppm phosphorous
· 250 to 350 ppm zinc
· 1200 ppm calcium.
1. A sulfated ash limit of 0.6 percent mass has been placed on all engine lubricating oils recommended for use in Cummins® B, C, and L10 natural gas engines. Higher ash oils can cause valve and/or piston damage, spark plug fouling, and lead to excessive oil consumption and degradation of the catalyst.

This document applies to Flogistix packages with Cummins engines that are currently in service and is applicable to all Flogistix employees, contractors, and temporary employees.
Employees sampling or removing used engine oil near compressor or pump packages need to be aware of the possibility of Hazardous gas. Employees should be aware that units could contain flammable and toxic gasses. Potential for the possible hazards of gas ignition or fire, hot surfaces & fluids. Risk of possible concentration of H2S. Hazardous gases could be in the units pressure vessels, cooler, or associated piping and risk of inhalation of hazardous gas fumes. Environmental spill of compressor oil and production fluids
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Field Mechanical duties apply for this procedure. Flogistix EHSS Manual, Section 8, Procedure 8.3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Four Gas Monitor, which is outlined in the Flogistix EHSS Manual, Section 8, Procedure 8.3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
This procedure applies to all units in service in the field, at a service shop, or in any storage yard.
Insure Flogistix personnel have proper safety certification or site orientation if required by the Flogistix Customer.
Insure Flogistix personnel adhere to any Customers safety practices.
Proper use of required tools
