This Policy is completed waiting on Field Service, Engineering & Safety approval.
The purpose of this document is to establish the minimum viscosity or con-dimming limits on screw compressor oil requirements for operating a Flogistix Rotary Screw Compressor to ensure compressor longevity by monitoring, sampling & maintaining the compressor oil as laid out in this procedure.
This procedure applies to all rotary screw compressor units that are currently in service that have Polyglycol Synthetic Compressor Oil as the compressor lubricant. This will affect all units in the field, at a repair shop, and in storage yards. Flogistix Service Technicians will perform the recommended inspection of the compressor oil and follow the outlined recommended procedure for determining compressor oil replacement or continued use. Flogistix Service Technicians will perform the scheduled PM as required according to the type of compressor unit being maintained. This procedure was developed as a basic guide to understanding the operation and requirements of the Ployglycol Synthetic compressor oil in rotary screws compressing natural gas.
Before any work is performed a JSA needs to be done according to Flogistix procedure along with any Customer requirements before any work is started.
Introduction of Ployglycol Synthetic Screw Compressor Oil:
Polyglycol Screw Compressor Oil:
Polyglycol oil is more commonly used when gas with higher heavy hydrocarbons are present. Polyglycol based oil has a higher resistance to mix with hydrocarbons, condensate, or other mineral oils.
Unlike oil for engines, screw compressor oils do not need the same additive packages like detergent and the anti-wear additives that are required for engines. Screw compressor oil will have a different type of anti-wear additive along with a different type of anti-foaming additives.
Polyglycol oil and other synthetic oil types usually have a higher resistance to temperature and can maintain required viscosity levels at temperatures above the gas dew points.
The additive package in the ployglycol consists of:
•Corrosion Protection,
•H2S Inhibitors,
•Viscosity Index Improvers,
•Pour Point Depressants,
•Anti-Foam,
•Gas Release (Air Release),
•Anti-Oxidants.
Compressor oil viscosity:
With all compressor oils either Mineral Oil or Polyglycol Synthetic Oil the viscosity has to be monitored.
When looking at compressor oils there will be a designation number in the product name as in these examples with the Summit NGP150 mineral oil, PGS150, FLO150 and FLO150K the 150 designation is the centistoke or viscosity of the oil when new.
When checking the viscosity of the compressor oil in the field with a viscosity checking tool, Flogistix would not like to see the centistoke or viscosity of the oil to be below 90 centistokes with the sample temperature of around 80 deg F.
When the oil is below 90 centistokes at 80 deg F the oil would have enough viscosity to lubricate and protect the compressor at the temperature of 80 deg F. Once this oil would get at its operating temperature its viscosity would drop below the required viscosity at operating temperature. If this compressor oil would be allowed to continue to run it could possibly do internal damage to the screw compressor.
If the sample taken is a little below 90 centistokes, and the Technician on location is confident that if the oil is allowed to run that the oil will cook off the condensate. The incoming condensate issue also needs to be been stopped.
This oil can be continued to run, but additional sampling needs to be done to insure the oil returns back up above the 90 centistoke rating.
The oil can be run for short intervals to allow the condensate to cook off and viscosity rating to increase.
Management - Management is responsible for implementing, supporting, and enforcing the requirements of this procedure to their respective locations/area.
EHSS - Responsible to assist in the implementation of this procedure and to review for effectiveness.
Employees, Contractors, Vendors, ETC. - Are responsible to follow the follow the requirements outlined in this procedure and ask for assistance
This procedure applies to all rotary screw compressor units that are currently in service that have Polyglycol Synthetic Compressor Oil as the compressor lubricant and is applicable to all Flogistix employees, contractors, and temporary employees.
Employees sampling or removing compressor oil from pressure vessels need to be aware of the possibility of Hazardous gas. Employees should be aware that units could contain flammable and toxic gasses. Potential for the possible hazards of gas ignition or fire, hot surfaces & fluids. Risk of possible concentration of H2S. Hazardous gases could be in the units pressure vessels, cooler, or associated piping and risk of inhalation of hazardous gas fumes. Environmental spill of compressor oil and production fluids
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Field Mechanical duties apply for this procedure. Flogistix EHSS Manual, Section 8, Procedure 8.3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Four Gas Monitor, which is outlined in the Flogistix EHSS Manual, Section 8, Procedure 8.3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
This procedure applies to all units in service in the field, at a service shop, or in any storage yard.
