This Policy is completed and waiting Field Service, Engineering, & EHSS approval
The purpose of this procedure is to establish the minimum requirements for safely installing and Activating a Det-Tronics model LEL Monitor to a LOGIX control panel.
This procedure applies to the installation and activation of the Det-Tronics model LEL Monitor on Flogistix units with LOGIX control panels that are in currently in service in the field, Test Loop, at a repair shop, and or in storage yards. Flogistix Service Technicians will perform the required steps to properly install and activate the Det-Tronics LEL Monitor in the LOGIX panel. This procedure is to be used as a guide for the correct, wiring, set up and activation of the Det-Tronics LEL Monitor only. The mounting of the LEL Monitor on the skid or calibration is not part of this procedure.
Before any work is performed a JSA needs to be done according to Flogistix procedure along with any Customer requirements before any work is started.
Some compressor packages have an optional LEL monitor installed on the skid. This is usually a customer requirement and not a standard option on Flogistix rental units.
Flogistix when required uses the Det-Tronics brand LEL monitor.
What does LEL stand for? Lower Explosive Limit
What is the recommended LEL limit?
According to OSHA Section 1915.12(b)(3) Flammable atmospheres. Atmospheres with a concentration of flammable vapors at or above 10 percent of the lower explosive limit (LEL) are considered hazardous when located in confined spaces. However, atmospheres with flammable vapors below 10 percent of the LEL are not necessarily safe.
Such atmospheres are too lean to burn. Nevertheless, when a space contains or produces measurable flammable vapors below the 10 percent LEL, it might indicate that flammable vapors are being released or introduced into the space and could present a hazard in time. Therefore, the cause of the vapors should be investigated and, if possible, eliminated.
The Det-Tronics LEL monitor operates on 24 VDC and sends out a 4 to 20 mA Analog signal.
When sensing, LEL is measured in percent not in parts per million
When powered there will be a Green light in the window (As shown below)
It takes 1 to 2 minutes to warm up once powered.
After warm up the light should be solid Green
If the light is yellow it is not sensing or is out of calibration (color of light may be more of an Orangish Yellow color)
If blinking Red it is sensing but is sensing 5% to 40% LEL
If solid Red it is sensing above 50% LEL
The LEL monitor senses flammable gas from the vents in the black cover of the monitor
To wire the Det-Tronic monitor remove the lid on the back of the monitor.
The monitor needs to be wired as Isolated (Sourcing)
To set up the LEL monitor you will need to be logged in under Programmer Level.
From the Home page go to Settings and then Analog Setup Page then touch the Next Page button.
After connecting wires from the monitor in the LOGIX panel to the Spare Analog Input, check to make sure the LOGIX panel is reading a 4-20 mA signal and not an open circuit (As shown below)
Also turn ON the Spare AI Input as shown above
Go back to the Analog Setup page.
Touch the Spare AI Setup button (as shown below by the arrow)
After touching the Spare AI Setup button a small screen will pop up
In the pop up screen as shown above where the top arrow is pointing to the Spare AI Setup Label box type in LEL
Where the middle arrow is pointing to the Device U/M select % from the drop down menu.
Where the bottom arrow is pointing to the Dispaly U/M select % from the drop down menu
Push the Close Page button (as shown by the arrow below)
The LEL should be visible in the yellow box and should show percentage when the monitor senses flammable gases.
(As shown in the example below)
The high and low LEL shutdown setpoints should also be entered
Management - Management is responsible for implementing, supporting, and enforcing the requirements of this procedure to their respective locations/area.
EHSS - Responsible to assist in the implementation of this procedure and to review for effectiveness.
Employees, Contractors, Vendors, ETC. - Are responsible to follow the follow the requirements outlined in this procedure and ask for assistance
This procedure applies to units with A Det-Tronics LEL monitor installed to a Logix panel. This is applicable to all Flogistix employees, contractors, and temporary employees using this procedure.
Employees need to be aware of the possibility of electrical sparks or electrical shock from DC voltage from electrical contacts or by grounding, this also could cause an ignition hazard. Employees should be aware that units could contain flammable and toxic gasses. Potential for the possible hazards of gas ignition or fire, hot surfaces & fluids, rotating equipment. Risk of possible concentration of H2S. Hazardous gases could be in the units pressure vessels, cooler, or associated piping and risk of inhalation of hazardous gas fumes. Environmental spill of engine waste oil and production fluids.
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Field Mechanical duties apply for this procedure.
Four Gas Monitor, which is outlined in the Flogistix EHSS Manual, PPE Section 8, Procedure 8.3
This procedure applies to all units in service in the field, at a service shop, or in any storage yard.
Insure Flogistix personnel have proper safety certification or site orientation if required by the Flogistix Customer.
Insure Flogistix personnel adhere to any Customers safety practices.
