This Policy is completed waiting on Engineering & Safety approval.
The purpose of this procedure is to establish the minimum requirements for performing installation and diagnostics on the Mag Pick-Up (MPU) on gas engine drive compressor packages. Also to ensure Mag Pick-Up (MPU) is supplying the proper amount of voltage as laid out in this procedure.
This procedure applies to all units that are currently in service in the Field, Test Loop, at a Repair Shop, or in Storage Yards. Flogistix Service Technicians will perform the diagnostics as required according to the type of Mag Pick-up being used on the gas engine.
Before any work is performed a JSA needs to be done according to Flogistix procedure along with any Customer requirements before any work is started.
There are two Mag Pick-ups that are used on Flogistix gas engine drive units equipped with the LOGIX panel. Older units that may have a Murphy type panel may be equipped with just a single Mag Pick-Up. Mag Pick-up are usually located at the rear of the engine in the flywheel housing. Most flywheel housings have a Mag pick-up hole drilled on the upper right and upper left of the flywheel housing. As seen in the example photo
Most Mag Pick-ups that Flogistix uses are a SAE 5/8" 18 thread.
About Mag Pick Ups:
Mag Pick ups are a Hall Effect Sensor, it is a generator that creates a weak AC voltage.
It is installed into the flywheel housing of an engine, so that the starter ring gear acts upon it to generate a voltage pulse each time a gear tooth passes the end of the sensor. Ideally, the air gap between the MPU and the Flywheel should be as small as possible—typically 0.005 inch.
Setting the MPU space:
With the engine stopped, screw in the MPU until it touches a flywheel tooth. On large engines make sure a flywheel tooth is in the center of the MPU threaded hole. Once the MPU is rotated all the way in and touches the flywheel rotate the MPU back out 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn and lock down the MPU jam nut while holding the MPU’s position.
MPU’s when properly set, will generate typically greater than 3 volts AC.
Normal output voltage is 3 to 8 volts AC, some MPU’s can generate up to 30 volts AC.
At higher RPM the MPU may generate a higher voltage than 8 volts AC. 3 volts AC is the minimum voltage that is required by the PLC or GAC controller.
It is recommended to check and clean the end of the MPU during each Preventative Maintenance. When engines are started and stop regularly the MPU may collect fine metal shavings on the end of the MPU causing the MPU to not generate the proper AC voltage or put out the proper pulse signal.
Management - Management is responsible for implementing, supporting, and enforcing the requirements of this procedure to their respective locations/area.
EHSS - Responsible to assist in the implementation of this procedure and to review for effectiveness.
Employees, Contractors, Vendors, ETC. - Are responsible to follow the follow the requirements outlined in this procedure and ask for assistance
This procedure applies to all engines equipped with a Mag Pick-Up (MPU) and are applicable to all Flogistix employees, contractors, and temporary employees.
Employees need to be aware of the possibility of electrical sparks or electrical shock from AC voltage from electrical contacts or by grounding, this also could cause an ignition hazard. Employees should be aware that units could contain flammable and toxic gasses. Potential for the possible hazards of gas ignition or fire, hot surfaces & fluids, rotating equipment. Risk of possible concentration of H2S. Hazardous gases could be in the units pressure vessels, cooler, or associated piping and risk of inhalation of hazardous gas fumes. Environmental spill of engine waste oil and production fluids
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for normal Field Mechanical duties apply for this procedure.
Four Gas Monitor, which is outlined in the Flogistix EHSS Manual, PPE Section 8, Procedure 8.3
This procedure applies to all units in service in the field, at a service shop, or in any storage yard.
Insure Flogistix personnel have proper safety certification or site orientation if required by the Flogistix Customer.
Insure Flogistix personnel adhere to all Customers safety practices.
