Bus Driver Work Hours Restrictions Law & Required Log Books

SUMMARY:

Drivers are restricted to the following work hour conditions:

  • Drivers must have at least 8 hours rest within a 24 hour period, for all employment;

  • Drivers may only drive a maximum of 10 hours per day, for all employment;

  • Drivers may not work more than 15 total hours in a 24 hour period, for all employment

  • Drivers are limited to a total of 60 hours of work in any consecutive 7 day period, for all employment.

Log Books:

BCSD will expect all drivers to utilize a standard driver logbook for all runs that exceed the 100 air mile definition as stated Section 395.1(e)(1), and any run that extends across state lines to an adjacent state even if the run culminates in Utah. The 100 air mile definition is an exception. You must account for every day on your log, even days off, unless you are covered by a logbook exception on any of the days. Driving assignments that extend a driver beyond the 100 mile limit in a given week should have their log book complete when traveling outside the 100 air mile barrier.

DRIVING TIME: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, 395.5: Maximum driving time for passenger-carrying vehicles.

(a) No motor carrier shall permit or require any driver used by it to drive a passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicle, nor shall any such driver drive a passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicle:

(1) More than 10 hours following 8 consecutive hours off duty; or

(2) For any period after having been on duty 15 hours following 8 consecutive hours

off duty.

(b) No motor carrier shall permit or require a driver of a passenger-carrying commercialmotor vehicle to drive, nor shall any driver drive a passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicle, regardless of the number of motor carriers using the driver’s

services, for any period after–

(1) Having been on duty 60 hours in any 7 consecutive days if the employing motor carrier does not operate commercial motor vehicles every day of the week
