Vending Machine Policy

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to provide consistency and compliance with state Board of Education Rule R277-719 which governs the sale of food sold on the school campus outside of school meals.

Contracts: All food/beverage vending machine contracts, established with 3rd party vendors, shall be signed by the President of the Beaver County School District Board of Education and the District Business Administrator.

Periodic Reports: Schools shall provide a report to the Superintendent at least once each year outlining vending machine sales and expenditures for which the funds were used for. The reports must be reviewed by the Business Administrator for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.

Accepted Uses of Vending Machine Income: Schools shall adopt a written school improvement plan, with formal approval from their community council, indicating the purposes for which vending machine income will be used . The school improvement plan must be filed with the Superintendent at least once annually.

Acceptable Items to Be Sold: Schools shall adopt a written school improvement plan, with formal approval from their community council, indicating the acceptable food/beverage items to be sold in vending machines, concession stands, or any other food sales which are not part of the reimbursable lunch, breakfast or after-school snack programs. Schools may:

(1) prohibit the sale of foods of minimal nutritional value.

(2) limit all foods to no more than 300 calories per unit.

(3) prohibit foods:

(a) that are more than 35 percent total fat (not including nuts, seeds, non-fat and

low-fat dairy);

(b) in which more than 10 percent of the total calories come from saturated fat (not

including nuts, seeds, non-fat and low-fat dairy);

(c) that contain any trans fats;

(d) that list "caffeine" as an ingredient;

(e) in which more than 35 percent of the product is sugar by weight (not including

100 percent fruit or vegetable juice with no added sugars; fruits; vegetables;

nonfat or low-fat milk or yogurt); or

(f) with a sodium content greater than 200 mg per portion (not including 100 percent

fruit or vegetable juice; fruits; vegetables; nonfat or low-fat milk, yogurt or

cheese).

(4) limit beverage size to no more than 20 ounces, excluding water.

Faculty Room Machines: Income from vending machines designated for faculty use only shall be used for machine inventory restocking costs and other faculty related expenses.
