Colibri vs. Contact Paper Youtube Video

What the machine does:

The Colibri Machine acts like the old "Seal a Meal" food storage system. It fuses the plastic covers to the size of the book for a snug fit, while still being completely removable without damage to the book. If you have ordered library processing on books ordered from the Scholastic Dollars Catalog, you may have noticed they have been using these covers. Does not need to be warmed up like a laminating machine.

The most awesome feature of this machine is that it takes less than a minute to cover a book. Most other covers such as contact paper, Kapco, and mylar covers take up to 5 minutes per book and may require other materials such as tape or bone folders to attach them to the book. Check out this video for the Colibri vs. Contact Paper comparison.

The Colibri covers come in 3 sizes: Mini, Standard, and Big. They also come in two thicknesses 3.5 mil and 4.7 mil. Our workshop featured the thicker version. The covers average about $1.00 per book.

The mini will fit most paperbacks and some hard covers. It depends on the thickness of the book. Some fatter books will require the standard size due to their thickness. For example, most of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books can fit the mini, but the Dork Diaries books, which are the same dimensions, will not fit the mini due to their thicker size. If you can only afford one size at first, buy the Standard. They fit almost everything. The Big size are ideal for Guinness Book of World Records and your picture book collection.

Why I love my Colibri

  • Covers are fast to put on
  • Covers can be easily replaced
  • you can put them on paperback or hardcover
  • Book returned covered in maple syrup just put a new one on!
  • Book returned covered in exploded ink pen

Drawbacks:

  • The downside of Colibri is that they don't stay "pretty" as long as Mylar covers do.
  • Some students just can't resist poking holes in or ripping the plastic
