CYRM 2019-2020

Greetings from the CYRM committee. In this unprecedented time we realize that many of you are working to find ways to allow your students to still be able to participate in CYRM and we are extremely grateful. We know that many folks are eager to video tape themselves reading the Picture Book and PBOR nominees to students and to ensure we are following all appropriate fair use and copyright guidelines we have reached out to the publishers for guidance.

As of Tuesday March 31st, a number of publishers have responded directly with permissions for the picture books and PBOR nominees.

Peter Pauper Publishing for The Highest Mountain of Books in the World

Chronicle Books for Her Right Foot

Penguin for Can I Be Your Dog and Lillian's Right to Vote

Harper Collins for The Bad Seed and The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors

Peter Pauper Press: With that in mind, Peter Pauper Press absolutely grants permission for educators to share The Highest Mountain of Books in the World via video as described. We hope that our book, as well as the others educators will be sharing with their students as a part of your program, will make life at home a little brighter for students across California.

Chronicle: Please see a note we put together regarding read-aloud permissions during the COVID-19 outbreak here, and please don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions.

Penguin: Please click on this link for the new PRH Permissions Statement for videos. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/penguin-random-house-temporary-open-license/ We hope these directions will help you achieve your goals.

Harper Collins: 1. Confirm that the title to be read is published by HarperCollins Children’s Books by checking the Copyright © page.

2. At the beginning of the reading, state it is “with permission of HarperCollins Children’s Books”.

3.. Send their name, school or library, city and state, and the title and author/illustrator of the book they intend to read online to ChildrensPermissions@HARPERCOLLINS.com.

4.. Delete uploaded or archived videos or, in the event the applicable platform does not permit deletion, disable access to uploaded videos, by the end of the local school year.

For the other nominees from Disney and Little Brown the companies have published guidelines for their books that they are asking everyone to follow.

Universally, the publishers are asking readers to clearly state they are reading with permission from the publishers and to only share videos in certain platforms and to delete them after a certain amount of time.

The CYRM committee urges you to please follow all publishers guidelines and requests to ensure our good relationship with our publishers. I am still working on the other nominees for our older readers at this point.

Thank you and happy reading.

Janet Wile and Sandra Yoon, Co-Administrators for the CYRM committee
