Establishing Routines will help your lesson go smoothly when students know what to expect. There always seems to be some new template to fit lessons in to, but the essential parts are this:
Engaging Hook:
I like to show an introductory video to get the students' attention. This also gives me time to check in books without losing instructional time.
Direct Instruction:
Make sure to identify to students the learning task for today "I do it"
Modeling:
Show the students a sample you or another student has made, and group collaboration. "We do it"
Independent Practice:
Students work independently. This is the time in which students are excused in small groups to check out books. "You do it"
Closure:
Make sure to leave the last 5 minutes to clean up, shut down computers, and make sure they have completed the learning task.
Research to Build and Present Knowledge:
Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.
Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:
Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they "see" and "hear" when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.
Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity:
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
