Take a Side Activity:
In an argument essay, students are forced to take a side, even if they are ambivalent about the issue. Ask students to divide themselves and move to different sides of the classroom depending on which side they take:
Love Daylight Saving Time
Hate Daylight Saving Time
This forces students to choose by physically moving to a side. The two sides face each other across the room. Ask 3 different students to tell why they support the side they are on. Then do the same for the other side. See if anyone wants to change sides based on the arguments of their peers. Emphasize that there is no right answer, otherwise we wouldn't be having a debate about it. The only thing that matters is how well you can support your side and if you can convince others to see your point of view.
