This white organza overlaid on what was probably a peau de soie underskirt gown made by Bellville Sassoon had some notable facts. It was worn twice to Parliament, once in 1981 with the Spencer tiara and again in 1983 with the QM Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara. It's unclear whether any other gown could claim that as the record of OoP gowns seems a bit sketchy.
It was worn both times with the Queen's Family Order, which makes it tricky to peg the dates. It also had the very significant fact that it was the only gown we know that Diana actually designed.
According to David Sassoon, Diana actually furnished him with a self-drawn sketch which his salon later redrew (left) shown with a swatch of the silver tree embellishment that is scattered across the skirt and sleeves. As to why it didn't appear to be a favoured gown, my guess is it is chilly for what is likely to be an unheated medieval building. (I've had dinner at Westminster, in a House of Commons dining room, and can attest that parts of the building are in the crisp climate category, even in June.)
As for replicas we are fortunate enough to have one from each outing. Left by PrincessHike, right by DollFashionsByAlana.com who is displayed both with and without the jacket.
As a 50th Anniversary of JFK's inauguration, FM made a two-fer Jackie dressed doll that came with both her two inauguration gowns. For the 40th anniversary of Diana's first year in the Royal Family combined with a commemoration of her first Opening of Parliament, I'd have loved to have seen a sort of two-fer around this gown to include both sets of jewelry. (Really. Just make me the gown, jacket and the necklaces, I think I could do the rest.)
In order to achieve both looks, as an outfit set for the FM vinyl doll, I'd like to see it include:
1. Gown
2. White opera gloves
3a. Spencer Tiara
3b. Queen Mary Cambridge Tiara
4a. Collingswood diamond necklace
4b. the QE Diamond clasp four-strand Japanese pearl choker
5. Pearl drop earrings
6. Pearl and diamond bracelets
7. Silver shoes
8. White fur jacket (faux fur please)
