Diana had a talent for dressing appropriately for every occasion, for the weather, for flattering her hosts, and for observing local cultural and religious conventions, sometimes all at once. This Catherine Walker calf-length silk dress in pale pistachio green filled the bill. The dress features three-quarter sleeves, a cream yoke bib and cuffs, a pleated skirt and a wide-self belt. It's a lovely dress and is complimented by the wide Philip Somerville hat.
It was worn March 15th, 1990 on arrival in Lagos, Nigeria where its cool fabric and wide-brimmed matching hat kept Diana protected from the sun.
On May 13th, 1992 it was worn to visit the Al-Ashar Mosque, Cairo where Diana appropriately covered her head with a chiffon scarf in white, peach and pistachio. It also made many other appearances, including state visits, friends’ weddings, and even Trooping the Colour. This was likely due to the cool fabric, modest design and almost neutral pale shade of pistachio green; Diana likely chose green as a compliment to middle eastern dignitaries, as their flags often feature green.
Replicas on left by Alana Bennett and an unknown maker. (on right side top and bottom) by Jane Mahlig. Jane and Alana each included a hat and a scarf. Accessories for the one on the bottom left are unknown.
