After the "Wedding of the Century," Diana was whisked away from the palace in a gilded carriage to start her honeymoon in a lovely, feminine silk suit. The suit was judged to be charming by everyone with its frilliness & frothiness. The hat sported two large ostrich plumes and Diana finished it with a matching clutch & shoes.
The outfit itself is a pale cantaloupe silk tussore dress with a cummerbund style sash, and the skirt vented at the left knee. Diana had two jackets made for it, one with long sleeves, so that she could continue wearing it in cooler weather. The short sleeved spencer-style jacket was in matching fabric, with a frilly white collar edged in silk organza ruffles, tied with large bow and mirroring the same organza trim on the sleeve cuffs.
It was topped with a small veiled tricorn shaped hat in matching straw, trimmed with an ostrich flourish. It was sometimes worn with one of Diana's small multi-strand pearl chokers and a matching envelope clutch.
The ensemble was on display of Bellville-Sassoon's designs at the Fashion Museum in Bath, England for about a year with two other Diana outfits. (One a green and blue tartan dress, the other an unusual, unknown black velvet evening gown.)
The colour of the outfit was often called "peach," but she specified to the designers at Bellville-Sassoon that she wanted "cantaloupe." Several members of the Princess Diana Doll Club have told me that this is one of their dream outfits for FM Diana. It was one of my dream outfits for the Danbury Mint vinyl Diana that never happened.
The outfit was also worn on the Royal Tour of Australia, when the jacket was changed to the identical one with long-sleeves to suit the local season (as seen left.) The accessories were changed from matchy-matchy canteloupe to an ivory bag and low-heel shoes. It's such a perfectly Princess-y look. The choker was dropped in Australia; perhaps because her appearance there was less formal or perhaps because Diana was starting to practice her "less jewelry is more effective" philosophy.
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I'd like to see it include:
1. Jacket/Dress
2. Hat
3. Pearl choker
4. Cantaloupe satin low-heeled pump shoes (and white!)
5. Large peach envelope style clutch bag AND Ivory version
6. Pearl bracelet
7. Large pearl stud earrings
8. Gold watch
The doll outfit at left was created by Alana Bennett (dollfashionsbyalana.com). The next going right was by the late Ann Sago, then Princess Hike and on the near right by Axelle Marion.
