Diana had a lot of pale pink in her wardrobe over the years, and this dress was a fitting representative. Best of all, it started life with a hat…a wonderful wide brimmed, low-crowned hat. While the hat disappeared early in the career of the dress, the dress had a secret mission. This is the dress Diana planned to wear on a visit to Mother Theresa, who sadly was away. Instead, Diana was photographed visiting the small nun’s mission and convent with a second-in-command grinning little nun.
If that visit has come off, wouldn't it follow that THIS would have been the outfit to have made it in the People’s Princess Wardrobe Collection when Franklin Mint was looking for their spiritual outfit check box item? (I did wonder why the black lace Visiting the Pope dress wasn’t used instead, but perhaps it didn't provide a connection to Mother Teresa and and the preferred storyline and an excuse to add a rosary? (Whatever it was, I would have so much preferred this one to the white suit!) Part of the story goes that Mother Teresa gave Diana a rosary during their later meeting in New York, and it was buried in Diana's hands.
I’m advised that the trickiest part of this outfit is finding a suitable weight of pink silk for the main part of the dress. My take on it is that it needs a good quality linen mix or pure silk to get that sheen. The cut and tailoring of the pattern are both integral to how smart the dress looks in doll size.
It hasn’t been as frequently attempted as I would have hoped.
Here are the replicas I know about. From Left: 1) with and without hat, Jane Mahlig, 2) front and back, S ‘n’E Shoes, 3) with hat single view, Alana Bennett
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I'd like to see it include:
1. Dress
2. Hat
3. Gold Watch
4. Pink shoes
5. Pink satin clutch
6. Gold earrings
