This lovely cream dress is embellished on the skirt and short sleeves with satin bas-relief embroidery and scallops edging the hem and just above the elbow. Diana wore this outfit, along with a two toned hat by designer Marina Killery to the Gulf Forces Parade in June 1991. On the left side, she proudly displayed her regimental brooch of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars of which she was colonel-in-chief. She wore this often to military related events, and it would have been a key jewelry item on FM’s Navy Inspecting the Guard Suit (if FM hadn’t chosen to airbrush it out of history.)
The outfit was also worn to a service of thanksgiving at Portsmouth Cathedral wearing a red rose instead of the brooch, as in the replica.
The badge emblem is formed of a banner scroll ribbon in a Z shape superimposed over the letters “QMO” (for Queen Mary’s Own—a former name of the regiment,) under a crown of St Edward. The top bar of the Z is marked with 13th in Roman numerals, the bottom with 18th, and the connecting diagonal bar says “Royal Hussars.”
A print of Diana’s portrait in the Travolta gown with this brooch is available for purchase on the Royal Hussars’ web page (make sure you get the right Hussars, apparently practically everyone has their own pet regiment and Diana herself seemed to have a couple of regiments.) There are cuff links and a lapel badge, too, probably too big to pass for a doll scale version of the pin. Unfortunate.
Replica by the late Axelle Marion. I have this; it is sublime, and the hat is better than FM’s.
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I'd like to see it include:
1. Dress
2. Hat
3. Brown/white spectator shoes
4. Brown/white clutch (not sure why Axelle's is red/white)
5. Regimental brooch
6. Pearl drop earrings
7. Gold watch
8. Gold bracelet
9. Red rose boutonniere
