A rarely copied outfit, this lovely, floaty asymmetrically hemmed evening gown by Gina Fratini was worn to a ballet performance in Brazil. It was also featured on the cover of the Andrew Morton tell-all Diana book that is believed to be the deciding final straw in what led to the royal divorce.
It features a one-shoulder neckline embellished with pearl-beaded rosettes over a hankie-dress hemline, accessorised with pearl drop earrings, white satin pumps and a white satin clutch bag.
It became Lot 1 in the auction and sold for $85,000 and was later copied twice by the Franklin Mint, once as an outfit (below right) for the vinyl doll and then again as a seated porcelain doll. Prior to release of that outfit, it was copied by one collector who eventually went on to make a home business of sewing Diana replica clothing.
That seller copied it and sewed it by hand. Shortly after that, FM put it out in their People's Princess wardrobe collection. I have them both and have held on to the custom copy but can't explain why. They are both very well done, but the FM looks a bit artificial compared to the handmade one.
As an outfit for the FM vinyl doll, I was happy to see it include:
1. Gown
2. White shoes
3. White clutch bag
4. Pearl drop earrings
It would have been nice to see it include the aquamarine earrings and diamond bracelet worn with the gown to the ballet in Rio de Janeiro.
